I'd recommend “Confessions of a Budddhist Atheist” or better, “Buddhism Without Beliefs” – both by Stephen Batchelor – for a reasonable form of Buddhism based on what the original Buddha actually taught. They should read Stephen Batchelor's “Confession Of A Buddhist Atheist”. This is a slightly unusual book. Stephen Batchelor is a brilliant and elegant writer in Buddhism Without Beliefs, Living with the Devil: A Meditation on Good and Evil, and his most recent Confession of a Buddhist Atheist. When Stephen Bachelor's Book, 'Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist', was given the thumbs up by outspoken atheist Christoper Hitchens there were many who saw this is vindication for the philosophy. I have been reading an article in The Guardian, The new Buddhist atheism, by Mark Vernon, discussing the publication of a new book, Confession of a Buddhist atheist, by Buddhist practitioner and scholar Stephen Batchelor.
